SOUND FAMILIAR?

When couples therapy helps: the patterns that bring couples in

~

The same argument keeps coming back wearing different clothes — money, in-laws, the dishes — and never actually resolves.

~

You’ve drifted into being excellent roommates and co-parents who barely feel like partners.

~

Trust took a hit — a betrayal, a discovery, a slow erosion — and you don’t know whether it can be rebuilt, or how.

~

One of you wants to talk and one shuts down, and both of you are lonely inside the same house.

None of these mean your relationship is failing. They mean it’s carrying weight without tools — and tools can be learned.

THE APPROACH

Grounded in 40 years of research on what makes love last.

“What separates couples who make it isn’t fewer ruptures. It’s that someone reaches out mid-argument — and the other one reaches back.”

My couples work is built on the Gottman Method — the most extensively researched approach to couples therapy, drawn from four decades of studying thousands of real couples. It's practical and skills-forward: we identify the specific patterns pulling you apart, practice concrete tools for conflict and repair in session, and rebuild the friendship and trust underneath the friction.

You will not lie on a couch assigning blame. You'll work — together — and leave sessions with something to practice.

Why our couples sessions run 75 minutes

Fifty minutes is one person's hour. With two people in the room, a standard session ends right when the real conversation starts. New couples begin with 75-minute sessions: enough time for both of you to be heard, to practice a skill while it's fresh, and to leave settled rather than mid-argument.

Not in crisis? Come in anyway.

Married and long-term couples use structured assessments and periodic tune-ups to catch drift early and invest in the relationship like anything else you intend to keep. Engaged or newly serious? Start with the Vows & Values™ premarital program instead — it was built for you.

Before you use insurance for couples work

The honest limits — and why most of my couples choose private pay

~

Insurance sessions are 50 minutes. Plans cover couples work only at the standard session length — the 75-minute format is available private pay only.

~

A diagnosis is required. Insurance covers couples therapy only when it treats a diagnosed mental-health condition in one partner, documented in that partner’s permanent record, and meeting the plan’s medical-necessity standard.

~

Not every plan covers couples work at all. Family-therapy benefits vary widely, and some plans exclude couples counseling entirely — worth confirming before you count on it.

~

Relationship growth isn’t a covered service. Premarital preparation, enrichment, and checkups without a qualifying diagnosis are private pay by design — that’s the insurance system, not a policy of mine.

~

EAP couples sessions are 50 minutes with a set session count. When your EAP sessions end, we’ll talk through every option for continuing — including the longer private-pay format.

Private pay, by contrast: 75 unhurried minutes, no diagnosis on anyone’s record, no medical-necessity reviews, and no cap on how long we work. It’s why couples serious about this work usually choose it — and why I built my couples practice around it. Insurance remains welcome for those who prefer it, clear-eyed about the limits above.
